Sunday Mass Readings for the Ministry of Parents and Godparents

The Church professes Christian parents to be the “first” teachers of the faith and calls them to be the “best” teachers of the faith (The Rite of Infant Baptism). Godparents agree to assist in this ministry of parents. This resource from Catholic Lane is to assist you, parent or godparent, with using the Sunday Mass readings to teach the Catholic Faith and live the Catholic Faith as a family.

January 20th, 2019: Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: Isaiah 62:1-5, Psalm 96, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; John 2:1-11

SUMMARY OF READINGS

We are in the third week of themes that began with the Epiphany of the Lord. These readings provide an opportunity to reflect upon Marriage and God’s love for His people.

The first reading, taken from Isaiah 62, expresses God’s command to bring about change through a covenantal relationship likened to the love between spouses; this is why marriage plays such a key role in the covenantal theme of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. The Nuptial image of God’s love for us is a powerful one!

1 Corinthians 12 describes the diversity of gifts given by the Holy Spirit. John 2 is the manifestation of Jesus as the Son of God, at the Wedding at Cana, through Jesus’ first miracle within the context of a marriage feast.

CATECHETICAL TALKING POINTS

These readings provide an opportunity to reflection on Marriage and God’s love. “CCC” refers to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

  • The connection between Epiphany and the Wedding at Cana (CCC 528).
  • Marriage as a theme throughout the events of Scripture (CCC 1602-1620).
  • Marriage as a Sacrament (CCC 1638-1642).

TRUTH IN ACTION

Parents or godparents can also put the catechetical content into action through various activities. Here are just a few examples:

  • Pray with your child or godchild for the gift of knowing their vocation and pray for those that are married.
  • Share stories with your child or godchild that witness to the difference Jesus makes in a marriage.
  • Review old pictures or videos of family that have gotten married.
  • You and your child/godchild can give the gift of a date night to a married couple by babysitting their children.
