Sunday Mass Readings for the Ministry of Parents and Godparents

The Church professes Christian parents to be the “first” teachers of the faith and calls them to be the “best” teachers of the faith (The Rite of Infant Baptism). Godparents agree to assist in this ministry of parents. This resource from Catholic Lane is to assist you, parent or godparent, with using the Sunday Mass readings to teach the Catholic Faith and live the Catholic Faith as a family.

May 5, 2019: Third Sunday of Easter: Acts 5:27-32, 40-41, Psalm 30, Revelation 5:11-14, John 21:1-19

SUMMARY OF READINGS

The reading from Acts demonstrates the importance of following Christ and accepting difficulties that come from the world. The second reading, from the Book of Revelation, depicts the Lamb of God (Jesus) being worshiped. The Gospel tells of Saint Peter’s reconciliation with Jesus and the command for Peter to shepherd Christ’s flock.

CATECHETICAL TALKING POINTS

These readings provide an opportunity for exploring the role of the pope in the Church. “CCC” refers to the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

  • Jesus gives Saint Peter a mission (CCC 553).
  • The reconciliation and conversion of Saint Peter (CCC 1428-1429).
  • Saint Peter and the Ministry of the Pope (CCC 880-881).
  • The Ministry of the Pope and the College of Bishops (CCC 882-886).

TRUTH IN ACTION

Parents or godparents can also put the catechetical content into action through various activities. Here are just a few examples:

  • Pray an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be, for the pope’s prayer intentions.
  • Have a Mass said for the pope.
  • Gift a prayer card to your child/godchild with the pope’s image on it.
  • Pray with your child/godchild for the health, holiness, and faithfulness of the pope.
