Sunday Mass Readings for the Ministry of Parents and Godparents

The Church professes Christian parents to be the “first” teachers of the faith and calls them to be the “best” teachers of the faith (The Rite of Infant Baptism). Godparents agree to assist in this ministry of parents. August 4, 2019: Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 2:21-23, Psalm 90, Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11, Luke 12:13-21

Summary of Readings

The first reading express that worldly efforts are vanity while the second reading challenges us to seek the things of God. The Gospel proclaims Christ’s teaching, with the use of a parable, that we must rid ourselves of the greed of possessions and become “rich in what matters to God.”

Catechetical Talking Points

These readings teach us that we are made for God and should not allow earthly possessions and earthly pursuits to become an idol, a false god. The goal is deeper communion with Jesus.

Truth in Action

Parents or godparents can also put the catechetical content into action through various activities. Here are just a few examples:

  • Ask your child or godchild to help you find toys, clothes, shoes, movies, and other items to donate to a local mission (items in good condition).
  • Go to a weekday Mass, not because you have to but because you chose to prioritize the Mass on that day.
  • Renew efforts to begin each day with prayer.
  • Gift a prayer card to your child or godchild to help them begin their day with prayer.
  • Perform an Examination of Conscience over your daily and weekly schedule. Ask: “Do I fit things into God’s plan for me or do I fit God into my plans for me.”
