George Washington on Religion and Morality

George Washington was born this day, February 22nd, in 1732. (At the time of his birth, the date was enumerated Feb. 11th, 1731; this was changed by the Calendar (New Style) Act 1750.)

Washington and Alexander Hamilton had collaborated on writing the address during the summer of 1796. It was first published on Sep. 19th in the Philadelphia newspaper American Daily Advertiser. Philadelphia was then the nation’s capital city.

The 1795 portrait is by Gilbert Stuart.
