Poem: “In Company with Angels”

In Company with Angels

Hope in a small bee
The immortal leaves of the holly
The abdomen, gold and black
Tapered and oval
Shine in the April sun
And the deep green unchanging leaves
Stiffened, smooth
Unfold and spread to the stream of light

Everywhere around and in
Death and immortality
Dread in us and hopefulness
Faith and charity
For if the insect needs no faith
You who see it can be faithful
And if you are not beautiful
The bee and holly show in light their mystery
All together one and woven
Ancient and new born

See the New Jerusalem
Descending in the sea of light
Not alien, reciprocal
Implicit and original
Strange
But love’s new capital
Streets where you have walked before
Strolling with the host of heaven
Praising God in company with angels
